Tesla is being directed to recall over 26,000 vehicles over a windshield defrosting problem, marking the third recall the car manufacturer has issued in the last two weeks.
A “software error” for a valve in the heat pump affects the defrosting performance, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration wrote in a Tuesday letter acknowledging the company’s notification of the safety recall.

The decreased defrosting performance “may reduce driver’s visibility” and increase the risk of a crash, according to the letter addressed to Tesla. No crashes related to the defect were mentioned in the Tuesday letter.
The recall affects Tesla Model 3, S, and X vehicles from 2021 and 2022 and Model Y vehicles from 2020 through 2022.

This is the third recall Tesla has issued in the past two weeks. On Jan. 31, Tesla recalled nearly 54,000 vehicles over a malfunction with the “rolling stop” feature, which could allow cars to travel through an all-way stop intersection. The next day, the company recalled over 817,000 vehicles affected by a faulty seat belt chime.
The first of eight quarterly reports regarding the defective defrosters will be due on or before 30 days after the quarter ends, the NHTSA said.
