Suspect arrested in fatal Woodlawn hit-and-run

Baltimore County police have arrested and charged a 38-year-old man with committing a fatal hit-and-run in the Woodlawn area.

William E. Lentz, 38, of the 600 block of Orpington Road in Baltimore, struck and killed Anthony Banks, 52, on Monday at 8:32 p.m., police said.

Investigators say that Banks, of the 1400 block of Dorchester Avenue in Gwynn Oak, was walking across Ingleside Avenue when he was struckby an SUV traveling southbound on Ingleside.

Police say Lentz got out of his vehicle and went over to the victim, while Banks? wife also ran to her husband. Lentz told Banks? wife that he needed to get his cell phone from his SUV, but got back into his SUV and left the scene, police said.

Banks was taken to St. Agnes Hospital where he later died.

At 11:45 p.m. Thursday evening, police received a call from Lentz?s spouse, who advised that he had not been seen for several hours.

When officers arrived at Lentz?s residence, they learned that Lentz had been drinking heavily since Monday evening and was depressed, police said.

Police found Lentz on Orpington Road near Old Frederick Road in the back of his vehicle, a silver and burgundy 1999 Chevy Suburban.

When officers looked closely at the vehicle, they noticed fresh damage to the passenger headlight area, matching descriptions of the vehicle involved in the accident, police said.

Crash investigators interviewed Lentz and discovered that he was responsible for hitting Banks on Monday, according to police.

Lentz has been charged with hit and run. He was taken before a court commissioner Fritoday day and is being held on $125,000 bail at the Woodlawn Precinct. He is scheduled for a bail review on Monday.
