Airbnb extends party ban through summer

Airbnb extended a global ban on parties at host properties Thursday but recognized easing coronavirus restrictions amid increasing vaccination rates.

The company instituted its party ban in August 2020, which prohibits gatherings of more than 16 people, regardless of whether rental property hosts are willing to allow them.

“This policy has proven to be popular with our Host community — the vast majority of whom already prohibited parties in their own House Rules,” the company said in its announcement.

The accounts of those who violate the party ban may be subject to termination, the company said in its August guidelines.

“Throughout the past few weeks, we have heard from members of our community who have sought clarity on whether the ban would remain in effect, particularly from community members in the regions that are gradually reopening,” Airbnb’s Thursday announcement noted.

Airbnb made the extension “to provide them with that clarity, as well as to be as direct as possible that we will not tolerate behavior that disrupts neighborhoods or violates the trust of our Host community,” it added.

The company will provide a party update at summer’s end.

There has been a relaxation of coronavirus-related guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which no longer recommends mask-wearing and physical distancing among those who have been fully vaccinated, as well as from numerous states that no longer impose mask requirements or business capacity restrictions.
