Trump: Clinton insulted ‘amazing, hard working people’

Donald Trump accused Hillary Clinton of insulting “millions of amazing, hardworking people” after the Democratic nominee described “half of” Trump voters as a “basket of deplorables” harboring racist views.

“Wow, Hillary Clinton was SO INSULTING to my supporters, millions of amazing, hard working people,” Trump tweeted Saturday morning. “I think it will cost her at the Polls!”

Clinton made the comment at a Friday evening fundraiser. “To just be grossly generalistic, you can put half of Trump supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables,” she told donors in New York City. “But that other basket of people are people who feel that the government has let them down, the economy has let them down, nobody cares about them, nobody worries about what happens to their lives and their futures, and they’re just desperate for change.”

The setting invited comparisons to Mitt Romney’s infamous “47 percent” gaffe, which was also made at a fundraiser, and Republicans wasted no time in arguing that she had alienated much of America.

“Insulting everyday Americans to a group of wealthy donors shows whose priorities Clinton really has in mind and exposes the hypocrisy of a candidate whose stated desire to unite the country is clearly all for show,” Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus said Saturday afternoon. “The truly deplorable thing in this race is the shameful level of condescension and disrespect Hillary Clinton is showing to her fellow citizens.”
