DETROIT (AP) — Detroit plans to require private contractors hired to plow roads during heavy snows to have GPS on their trucks so work can be tracked.
The Detroit Free Press reports (http://on.freep.com/1iUdnZz ) an aim is to ensure that all neighborhood streets are plowed.

Gary Brown, Mayor Mike Duggan’s group executive for operations, says global positioning systems on the private trucks also could help the city lower costs by enabling Detroit to pay contractors by the mile, rather than contracts that aren’t tied to how much is cleared.
This past winter the city hired private companies to plow neighborhood streets after each snowfall of 6 inches or more, Detroit’s longstanding minimum for neighborhood plowing. City crews handle major roadways. Brown says they could add GPS tracking in the coming years as well.
