Hillary Clinton condemned Republican attempts to defund Planned Parenthood as a “full on assault on women’s health” in a video released Monday.
“Republicans like Scott Walker and Jeb Bush are calling to defund Planned Parenthood, the country’s leading provider of reproductive healthcare,” Clinton said. “And they are joined by Republicans in Congress who would not waste a minute to make that happen. If this sounds like a full on assault on women’s health, that’s because it is. When politicians talk about defunding Planned Parenthood, they’re talking about blocking millions of women, men and young people from life-saving preventive care.”
Clinton called out Republican presidential candidates Bush, Walker and Rick Perry for cutting healthcare spending while serving as governors of their respective states, calling the recent attacks on the federally-funded healthcare provided “more of the same.”
She criticized Scott Walker for shutting down state funds for Planned Parenthood centers in Wisconsin, and Bush for using taxpayer dollars to support abstinence-only programs while cutting funds for “crucial” family planning programs. Similarly, she called out Perry for cutting state funds for breast and cervical cancer screenings and attempting to “wipe out access to safe and legal abortion altogether.”
Clinton has portrayed herself as a “fighter” for the rights of women and children. In the wake of the recent allegations that Planned Parenthood is selling the tissue of aborted fetuses, Clinton has chosen to stand behind the organization, which is the largest provider of abortions in the country.
“When they attack women’s health, they attack America’s health, and it’s wrong, and we’re not going to let them get away with it,” Clinton said. “We’re not going back, we’re going to fight back. I’m proud to stand with Planned Parenthood and I’ll never stop fighting.”
This video comes just days after Clinton told a New Hampshire Union Leader that she found the series of videos released by the Center For Medical Progress “disturbing.” The campaign-produced video also came shortly before a Senate vote on defunding Planned Parenthood.
