Cabela’s announces plans for Anchorage store

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — A Nebraska-based outfitter is planning its first store in Alaska.

Cabela’s Inc. on Thursday said its Anchorage store will open in spring 2014. The Sidney, Neb.-based outdoor gear supplier said construction would begin next spring on the 100,000-foot store in south Anchorage.

The company in a release said it expects to employ about 200 full- and part-time employees.

Cabela’s currently operates 37 stores in the United States with plans to open more this year and next.

The company on Thursday reported a 56 percent jump in second-quarter earnings as retail sales of outdoor gear and sporting goods improved.

It generated $33.9 million net income, or 47 cents per share. Cabela’s revenue grew nearly 12 percent to $627.3 million in the quarter.
