Some thoughts about the Georgetown’s tough first loss in Big East Conference play:
The Hoyas (11-2, 2-1 Big East) were dominant inside with Julian Vaughn, who scored eight straight points – three layups and a dunk – in the first half off the pick and roll to trim an early eight-point deficit down to two. But Greg Monroe was harassed endlessly, committing four turnovers and finishing with just nine points.
Georgetown had no answer for David Cubbilan, who was 6 for 6 from beyond the arc, where he scored all of his season-high 18 points. The Golden Eagles finished with more three-pointers (12) than two-point field goals (9).
Austin Freeman finished with a game-high 20 points on 6 for 13 shots and hit all six of his free throw attempts. He also had a season-high six assists.
Chris Wright (9 points, 7 assists) was held without a single bucket and took only two shots in the second half — the second was his potential game-tying there with one second remaining — tough to imagine for a player who’d been averaging 24.3 points in his last three games.
Henry Sims has played more than nine minutes only once in Georgetown’s last six games, not an encouraging sign of his usefulness in Big East play. The Hoyas are going to need him against Connecticut, a team with more than its share of frontcourt depth.
