House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy said Monday that it’s time for people to start coming to grips with the fact that Donald Trump can win the GOP nomination, and that he has a better than 50-50 chance of doing so.
“A lot of people never thought that Trump could become the nominee, but he can,” he said on MSNBC’s Morning Joe. “You’ve got to get your head around that.”
“He’s got the momentum, I think there’s more a 50 percent chance he’s the nominee, and I think that’s what’s setting in for a lot of people,” he added. “Could they get their heads around Trump being the nominee?”
McCarthy said a Trump victory wouldn’t mean any of the other GOP candidates were no good, but that they simply couldn’t find the votes.
“There’s a lot of people that have not become president that I think would do a very good job as president,” he said. “You have to get elected.”
McCarthy said he would work with any of the remaining Republicans, and said House Republicans are working to lay out an agenda that could be picked up by the GOP nominee.
