Ad from Democrats targets Herschel Walker’s alleged threats against ex-wife

Democrats are ramping up advertising efforts against Senate candidate Herschel Walker (R-GA), targeting the Senate hopeful with allegations of violent threats toward his ex-wife in the past.

The ad is one of the first substantial efforts from Democrats to target Walker’s abuse allegations specifically, building on efforts from some Republicans who sought to use the allegations during the GOP primary as proof that he could cost the party the general election. The 30-second video will hit airwaves Wednesday and last until Election Day.

“While Herschel Walker has demonstrated a pattern of repeating lies and spreading falsehoods, he has never denied his ex-wife Cindy’s accusations of violence,” Senate Majority PAC spokeswoman Veronica Yoo told NBC. “We encourage voters to further research Herschel Walker’s publicly documented record of violence and decide for themselves whether he is ready to represent Georgia values in the United States Senate.”

The commercial is funded by Georgia Honor, a political organization affiliated with the Senate Majority PAC and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY).

The ad emphasizes allegations that Walker has “repeatedly threatened to kill his wife” and encourages voters to “look up the records yourself” — even going so far as to offer a Google search phrase, “Herschel Walker Violence,” for viewers to use. The TV commercial also displays excerpts from police records and past interviews.

Walker, who is endorsed by former President Donald Trump, has faced several allegations of violent threats and menacing behavior from his ex-wife and other women over the last 20 years, according to police records. However, the Senate hopeful and former NFL player has never been criminally charged.

Anti-Trump Republicans attempted a similar advertising attack against Walker during the GOP primaries that highlighted allegations of abuse. However, the Republican candidate brushed off the ads, releasing a video statement that he is “glad” the ad was released because it helps start the conversation on mental health struggles.

“It should come as no surprise that Chuck Schumer and Raphael Warnock released this ad the day after multiple polls showed Herschel leading,” Walker’s campaign told the Washington Examiner on Wednesday. “Democrats are running scared because they’re seeing that no amount of money they can spend to lie to the people of Georgia will work. Herschel has never hidden from his past and has always taken responsibility for his actions. It is time for Raphael Warnock to take responsibility for his failure to serve the people of Georgia.”

Walker has denied allegations that he has acted in threatening ways toward other women, according to Axios. However, the Republican candidate has admitted to threatening his ex-wife, who has since appeared alongside him in interviews describing the incidents.

Walker is vying to unseat Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) in the general election on Nov. 8. While the race is expected to be tight, Warnock has enjoyed higher poll numbers over his Republican opponent, with 54% saying they’d vote for Warnock over Walker (44%), according to a Quinnipiac poll.

Warnock has also enjoyed a fundraising advantage over his challenger Herschel Walker, particularly in the last quarter, when the incumbent raised $17.2 million compared to Walker’s $6.2 million.

The Washington Examiner reached out to the Senate Majority PAC for comment but did not receive a response.
