NBA, Maryland are only options for point guard
It’s the NBA or College Park for Greivis Vasquez next season, of that you can be sure.
“Let’s make that clear,” the Maryland junior said Thursday after working out for the Washington Wizards. “Greivis Vasquez is not going overseas. He’s not playing in Europe. I would rather get my education and get my degree if it comes to me going overseas.”
Vasquez stood out among the third and best foursome yet to audition for the Wizards ahead of the June 25 draft, which also included Kentucky junior Jodie Meeks, Ole Miss junior David Huertas and LSU senior Marcus Thornton.
Thursday also marked the first appearances for Sam Cassell and Randy Wittman, who were both named assistant coaches to Flip Saunders. Gene Banks also helped run the workout.
The Venezuelan’s demonstrative style in 2-on-2 exercises and improved shooting skills were the highlight for the open portion of the session.
“I’m a point guard,” said Vasquez. “I’m a 6-5 point guard. It’s not me trying to be cocky or anything like that. It’s just me telling people the position that I play. Some people get confused because I’m 6-5, that I’m a three guard or a two guard. I want to lead the team.”
Vasquez didn’t indicate what it would take for him to make a decision to leave Maryland for good. But Meeks said he felt his game was good enough for a place in the NBA next season, even though the Wildcats’ fortunes look to be on the rise with the arrival of head coach John Calipari and top recruit John Wall.
“If a team says they’ll take me in the first round, I’ll definitely try to stay,” said Meeks. “The first round is a good round to be in. But the late second round to not getting drafted, I’ll probably go back to school.”
District native Dwayne Anderson (Villanova), Gordon Watt (Houston Baptist), Micah Downs (Gonzaga) and Weyinmi Efejuku (Providence) will work out for the Wizards on Friday.
