Gas prices: Now at $2.93 per gallon and less expensive than a year ago

The national average price for a gallon of gas dropped again on Friday to $2.932 per gallon.

It marks the latest decrease in the national average for gas prices, which have been dropping as quickly as winter temperatures in the northeastern United States recently. Yesterday, the average price for regular gas was $2.94 per gallon, according to AAA. Fuel costs have dropped two cents per gallon since Monday, when the national average was $2.952. Gas is less expensive than it was a week ago, when it averaged $2.978 per gallon, and a month ago, when the national average for a gallon of regular gas was $3.075.

Friday’s national gas price average is also cheaper than a year ago, when the cost for a gallon of gas was $ 3.026.

Additionally, gas prices are at their lowest monthly national average since May 2021, when the average cost was $2.985 per gallon at the pumps, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. As of Friday, 36 states have average gas prices under $3 per gallon, the same number as Monday, according to AAA.

After gas prices reached historical highs during former President Joe Biden’s term, including the highest national average gas price in history in 2022, then-candidate Trump pledged affordable gas prices during the 2024 presidential campaign. Since President Donald Trump began his second term in January 2025, gas prices have fluctuated but have remained largely steady during the year, falling within a price range that did not exceed $3.21 per gallon. Moreover, unlike recent years, there was no customary surge in gas prices during the summer months.

Gas prices have now been under $3 per gallon for a week. It’s been a threshold that the national average for gas prices had been flirting with since the beginning of autumn. By Oct. 20, the petroleum analysis company GasBuddy claimed that the national average price for regular gas had dropped below $3 per gallon. This organization was alone in its assessment. Other gas analyses, including those from AAA, continued to show national average prices above $3 per gallon.

Nevertheless, gas prices continue to vary throughout the country. The states with the cheapest gas prices are located near the Gulf of America, while the states with the highest prices are located on the Pacific coast — and in the Pacific.

A recent development in gas prices shows that Hawaii is now the state with the most expensive statewide gas prices in the U.S. Average fuel costs in the Aloha State reached $4.452 on Friday, surpassing California, the previous titleholder for the most expensive gas prices for much of 2025. On Friday, California’s gas price average dropped to $4.396. There were no changes in positioning for the states with the following three most expensive fuel costs. Washington state is next with an average price of $4.036 per gallon. This was followed by Oregon at $3.648 and Alaska at $3.625.

Oklahoma, by far, has the lowest gas prices in the country, with an average cost of $2.358. Iowa is next at $2.507 per gallon, followed by Colorado at $2.509 per gallon. This week marks the first time Colorado has been among the states with the lowest gas prices in over two years. Texas is next at $2.509 per gallon, followed by Arkansas at $2.524 per gallon.
