Suspect in armored car robbery dies; 2 arrested

 

The man shot in the holdup of an armored-car guard has died, and two other robbery suspects have been arrested, D.C. police said.

The dead man has been identified as 27-year-old Kirk Anthony Dean, of Northwest Washington. Arrested were Darnell Crews, 26, and Anthony Jones, 21, both of the 800 block Butternut Street NW. They were charged with attempted armored car robbery.

Police said the men approached an armored vehicle on the 6500 block of Georgia Avenue NW at about 11 a.m. Wednesday. A gunman demanded the money being carried by the guard, and a shootout erupted.

Man dies after hotel jump

Prince William County Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a Woodbridge man who died while being transported to a hospital after jumping out of a third-floor hotel window.

At 2:30 a.m. Thursday, police said Wendell M. Bates jumped out of a hallway window of the Inns of Virginia in Woodbridge, landing on a vehicle in the parking lot.

Bates got up, ran down Jefferson Davis Highway and tried to run into traffic while police tried to detain him. After officers got him under control, he lost consciousness and died while being taken to an area hospital.

Scooter driver killed in crash

A scooter driver was killed after being struck by a car on Rockville Pike.

Officers saw a Buick LeSabre dragging a scooter shortly before 1:30 a.m. Thursday, said Officer Howard Hersh, a Montgomery County police spokesman. Police stopped the vehicle. At about the same time, someone called in a report of a struck pedestrian, Hersh said, and officers determined that the man, 30-year-old Roberto Nassar, had been driving the scooter.

The Buick driver, 22-year-old Michael Dalton, is charged with failing to remain at the scene and other offenses.
