Not great weekend for Georgetown

Georgetown senior guard Jason Clark was named to the All-Big East first team Sunday. But it was small compensation as the Hoyas’ worst nightmare unfolded with its regular-season finale loss at Marquette on Saturday.

Not only did Georgetown (22-7, 12-6 Big East) come up short of earning a precious double-bye into the Big East tournament quarterfinals, but now the Hoyas’ road to a possible conference championship couldn’t be more difficult.

A matchup with Pittsburgh (16-15, 5-13), which beat Georgetown on Jan. 28, could await in Wednesday’s second-round game. If the Hoyas prevail, they will be rewarded with a quarterfinal rematch against Cincinnati (22-9, 12-6) — the Bearcats beat them at Verizon Center on Jan. 9. With a victory they likely would converge with top-seeded Syracuse (30-1, 17-1) in the semifinals. No reminder is needed of the overtime loss at Carrier Dome on Feb. 8.

To complete the weekend of uplifting news, Georgetown freshman forward Otto Porter (9.0 points, team-high 6.8 rebounds per game) was snubbed by the All-Big East rookie team.
