Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old black man, died in 2015 due to neck injuries while in police custody in Baltimore. The case sparked massive riots in Baltimore and a nation-wide debate on police brutality.
“In no way does this behavior reflect our College of Charleston core values, especially as it relates to diversity, community and respect for the individual student,” college president Glenn McConnell said in a statement.
A spokesperson for the university told CNN that the student who wore the costume is still enrolled while the administration is investigating whether to take disciplinary action.
The College of Charleston’s Black Student Union wrote in a statement, “As students of the College of Charleston, we come to you in solidarity to ask that the students involved in this incident be reprimanded through indefinite expulsion.”
The family of the student in question said it has retained a lawyer but wouldn’t provide any further comment to reporters.
