Is Weiner’s seat still safe for Dems?

A new poll on the special election to fill former Rep. Anthony Weiner‘s seat for New York shows that Democrat David Weprin is only a few percentage points ahead of Republican candidate Bob Turner. The poll surveyed 501 likely voters in New York’s 9th district, and was conducted by the Siena College Research Institute in early August — but the numbers are a bit surprising since only 17 percent of respondents identified with Republicans, 19 percent identified as independents and an overwhelming 61 percent identified with Democrats. Weprin still leads Turner by two-to-one among Democrats, but 81 percent of Republicans said they would support Turner over Weprin, while 46 percent of independents favored Turner as well.

But there’s not much love left for Weiner, who resigned from the House of Representatives in June after revelations that he sent lewd pictures of himself to women on the internet. Eighty-nine percent of Republicans said they had an unfavorable view of him, along with 63 percent of Democrats and 69 percent of independents.
