Flashback: Clinton said Dems shouldn’t attack Dems on healthcare

Hillary Clinton on Tuesday attacked Sen. Bernie Sanders’ healthcare plan, nearly eight years after she said Democrats should never attack each other over how to deliver universal healthcare to Americans.

In 2008, Clinton had a harsh reaction to then-Sen. Barack Obama’s attack against her healthcare plan. She said Obama’s attack was a “deep disappointment,” and said it only helps the GOP when Democrats hit each other over healthcare.

“Since when do Democrats attack one another on universal healthcare?” she said.

“This is wrong, and every Democrat should be outraged because this is the kind of attack that not only undermines core Democratic values, but gives aid and comfort to the very special interests and their allies in the Republican Party who are against doing what we want to do for America,” she said. “So shame on you, Barack Obama. It is time you ran a campaign consistent with your messages in public. That’s what I expect from you.”

On Tuesday, however, Clinton reacted to Sanders’ rising poll numbers by saying she opposed his plan to create a universal single-payer healthcare system.

“Now Bernie, give him credit, he has a different idea,” Clinton said. “If that’s the kind of revolution he’s talking about, I’m worried.”

“I think that would create a big problem that would actually run the risk of hurting families, not helping,” she added. “I think to turn our healthcare over to the governors, with the record we’ve seen of Republican governors even refusing to expand medicaid … well, we have disagreement about the best path forward.”
