Donald Trump’s presidential campaign released its financial data from May late on Monday. The results are shocking, and not in a good way for Trump.
Hillary Clinton has 32 times as much cash on hand as Trump.
At least 76 members of the House of Representatives have more cash on hand than Trump.
The Trump campaign has just $1.3 million on hand, and brought in only $5.6 million in May. Clinton brought in $26.4 million.
For comparison, Mitt Romney’s campaign had $23.4 million in receipts in May 2012 and John McCain’s had $21.5 million in May 2008.
Of course, every election year is different, and some May fundraising efforts are more crucial than others. Trump became the Republican Party’s presumptive presidential nominee in early May, so he didn’t need to fundraise for a primary campaign anymore. Clinton, on the other hand, was pushing for the primary finish line and was likely desperate to fundraise as much as possible.
President George W. Bush’s re-election campaign raised only $13.4 million in May 2004, a great deal less than John Kerry’s $31.5 million. Bush still managed to win the election, although that gap wasn’t as large as this year’s gap between Trump and Clinton.
