Bernie Sanders prides himself on running a campaign that can’t be bought by billionaires and lobbyists. But for a few dollars, ordinary Americans can own a piece of the Vermont senator.
A Brooklyn-based design studio FCTRY has created a doll that looks like Sanders. Earlier this week, the Bernie Sanders Action Figure was put up for sale on the company’s Kickstarter page. The site asked buyers for a $20 donation and pledged to give $1 of each contribution to Sanders’ presidential campaign.
Over the past few days, thousands have purchased the doll, giving more than $53,000 to the Kickstarter campaign as of late Thursday. Those who purchase a mini Sanders can expect their toy in the mail in July, just around the corner from the Democratic party’s convention, when Sanders will take on Hillary Clinton for the nomination.
FCTRY has also made Clinton and Barack Obama action figures, which sold 20,000 and 200,000, respectively.
The company has not created a model of a Republican presidential candidate since it made Sen. John McCain in 2008.
