Cruz speculates about Trump ties to mob

Sen. Ted Cruz speculated that Donald Trump is not releasing his tax returns because it may reveal potential ties to organized crime in New York.

“We don’t know what it is he is hiding in those tax returns,” said Cruz on “Meet the Press” Sunday. Cruz released nine years of returns on Saturday, and Marco Rubio released five years’ worth of returns.

“Meet the Press” Host Chuck Todd pressed the Texas senator to back up his claims about Trump’s mafia ties.

Cruz responded that ABC, CNN and other outlets reported that Trump hired employees of S&A Construction, a concrete company owned by late mob boss “Fat Tony” Salerno. CNN reported that the company was used to build Trump Plaza condos in 1984.

“The fact that Donald seems terrified to release his taxes suggests there is a bombshell there,” said Cruz.

Trump is one of many real estate developers who did business with firms alleged to be controlled by mafia figures in New York City. Mob infiltration of the construction industry left many developers asserting they had to deal with such firms to complete projects in the 1980s and 1990s. Trump has not been accused of any personal affiliation or criminal activity with mob figures.
