County may loan $5 million for apartment revamp

Fairfax County may sign off on a $5 million loan to a developer to overhaul of 90 apartments in Bailey’s Crossroads and preserve them as affordable housing.

The Board of Supervisors will consider the project at the Sunset Park Apartments on Seminary Road on Monday. It is part of a wider initiative to hold down rents for families who would otherwise be forced out of the county by escalated home prices.

Most of the units will be made available to households who make as much as 60 percent of the areamedian income, or AMI, though some would be held for families of lower income. The AMI in Fairfax County is now more than $90,000 for a family of four.

The improvements would include new kitchens, appliances, bathrooms, heating and air conditioning, flooring and plumbing, as well as upgraded electrical, balconies and landscaping.
