Metro 5000 series rail cars check out after meltdown

Sixteen Metro rail cars that had been pulled out of service for a possible brake system problem last week will soon be riding the rails again, the transit agency said Tuesday. The transit agency had pulled the 16 rail cars Dec. 21 after a piece fell from the brake system of a similar 5000 series car, damaging two other trains and tying up the Blue and Orange lines for hours. The agency pulled and inspected cars that have equipment from the same manufacturing batch, but “no failures or defects [were] found,” Metro spokesman Dan Stessel said. “The investigation into the root cause remains ongoing.” — Kytja Weir
