Rep. Sharice Davids (D-KS) vowed to fight to protect and strengthen Americans’ Social Security benefits on X.

“Social Security is a promise that we made,” Davids said. “And yet, the current administration is actively putting it at risk by slashing services and rummaging through your personal data.”

According to Democrats on the United States Committee on Finance, the GOP “Big Beautiful” budget bill that passed on July 4, 2025, hastens the depletion of the Social Security trust funds. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) released a statement on Aug. 5, 2025, that attacked the Republican measure, which is expected to be a major election issue this fall.

“Not only did Republicans give massive tax breaks to corporations and the ultra-wealthy, not only did they make the largest cut to American health care in history, but now it is clear Republicans have brought Social Security closer to running out of money,” Wyden said.

Republicans counter that the law has significantly improved the economy in a number of ways, most notably as heading off what they describe as the biggest tax increase in history.

While Congress is not under a strict deadline to address the future of Social Security, according to the Social Security Administration, the program’s combined Old-Age and Survivors Insurance and Disability Insurance Trust Funds are projected to have enough dedicated revenue to pay scheduled benefits and administrative costs until 2032.

“If Congress does nothing to protect your benefits, 70 million Americans will see a 20% cut in their benefits in the next six years,” Davids said.
