ICE reports first confirmed case of coronavirus among its detained illegal immigrants

Immigration and Customs Enforcement reported on Tuesday its first confirmed case of the coronavirus within its population of tens of thousands of suspected illegal immigrant detainees.

A 31-year-old Mexican man being held at the Bergen County Jail in Hackensack, New Jersey, tested positive for the coronavirus, though ICE did not specify when he tested positive or when he began showing symptoms.

The unnamed man is in quarantine and receiving medical care. Others who came in contact with him prior to his diagnosis have been “cohorted” and monitored, ICE said.

ICE holds suspected illegal immigrants that it arrests within the United States in its own facilities, which are operated by private companies and local jails, as in this case. Detainees may be released or removed from the country following legal proceedings regarding their immigration status.
