For years, Gomez held what appeared to be one of the safest positions in California politics. Representing one of the most heavily Democratic districts in the country, the Los Angeles congressman repeatedly turned back primary contests from his left, relying on a coalition of organized labor, Latino voters, establishment Democrats, and progressives who viewed him as a dependable vote, even if not always the most ideologically pure.
