Clinton tells Puerto Rican voters ‘we are a nation of immigrants’

Hillary Clinton made a pitch to Puerto Rican voters during a campaign stop in Florida on Wednesday, touting her infrastructure plan and support for immigration.

“The diversity of the people here in Florida sends a strong message about valuing the fact that we are a nation of immigrants and we need to understand that and support that,” Clinton told the crowds at an organizing event during her fourth trip to the Sunshine State. Puetro Rico is a U.S. commonwealth.

Orlando has the second largest Puerto Rican population in the mainland United States, and as Clinton tries to moblize the Latino vote, she also emphasized her support for Puerto Rican statehood.

The Democratic front-runner said that “it is one of our great ironies” that Puerto Ricans living on the island can’t vote in the presidential election, but those who have moved to the states can, joking that “some are even starting to call Orlando the 79th municipality.”

“Anyone who wants to be president should pay attention to Puerto Rico and remind Americans that Puerto Ricans are American citizens,” she added.

Clinton also pushed her newly released $250 billion infrastructure investment plan, as she told the crowd that Florida has some of the worst traffic congestion in the nation and that her proposal would help.
