Democrats in Congress have launched an investigation into the Trump administration’s detention of the family members of more than 50 active-duty troops as part of its deportation efforts, a departure from previous policy that protected families from immigration enforcement, according to a new report.
More than 60 House and Senate members signed on to a letter sent on Sunday evening to the departments of homeland security, war, and veterans affairs, stating plans to investigate whether the DHS and Pentagon are working together to target service members and their families.

“These efforts imperil military readiness, weaken service members’ morale, and betray America’s promises to the people who put their lives on the line for our nation,” stated the letter, which was reported by the Associated Press on Monday.
The outlet recently reported that federal immigration authorities had detained the spouses and parents of dozens of servicemembers since President Donald Trump began his second term and unleashed a mass deportation operation.
Sens. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), and Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) are leading the Senate fact-finding mission, with counterparts in the House handling the effort in the lower chamber.
“This report is appalling and shows the unbelievable cruelty at the center of the Trump immigration agenda,” Blumenthal, the top Democrat on the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, said. “We will be demanding answers and accountability.”
Democrats charged that any collaboration between the DHS and DOW would raise “ethical and legal concerns.”

The Department of War told lawmakers in December 2025 that there was no policy change that made illegal immigrant family members of U.S. military a target.
Last week, the Trump administration created the Military Spouse Commission, which is intended to come up with policies to improve the lives of service members’ spouses.
