April breaks heat record

Last month was the hottest April on record globally, according to new data, keeping 2016 on track to become the hottest year on record.

Record-breaking monthly temperatures have become the norm over the last year, but NASA data issued Sunday showed the warming trend is far outpacing previous record holders.

The new data from the space agency shows the temperature of the Earth was over 1 degree Celsius higher than the 30-year average for April from 1951-80.

Last month was the hottest April since the last record-breaking year in 2010, with a 0.24-degree increase.

It marked the seventh consecutive month of new record-breaking monthly temperatures, and is the third month in a row for having the highest marginal increase in global temperatures above the previous record.
