Any chance the Peyton Manning-Colts divorce had of going smoothly is gone. Maybe it had already gone that way a couple weeks ago, but if there was a chance at an amicable parting, it clearly is over.
Now Colts owner Jim Irsay says it’s up to Manning whether he wants to return. His rationale? Manning could redo his deal so he’s not owed a $28 million bonus in less than a month. This is an easy read, a public relations ploy designed to make it look like the other guy’s fault. Will anyone really buy this? And does anyone really blame the Colts for not giving $28 million to a 35-year-old quarterback coming off neck fusion surgery who may or may not play again?

Of course not. But the more Irsay talks, the more it’s clear he’s not convinced Manning will play again. And it’s also clear he doesn’t want to be the bad guy. Thing is, I don’t think anyone would blame either side for parting ways. It makes sense.
