For the first time in the history of the McClatchy-Marist poll, President Obama’s job approval rating has fallen below 40 percent. According to the poll of 1,042 adults taken last Tuesday and Wednesday, only 39 percent of Americans approve of Obama’s job as president, while record 52 percent of respondents disapprove.
Like last week’s New York Times/CBS News poll, Obama’s net favorability rating has also gone negative. McClatchy-Marist found that only 46 percent of Americans have a favorable impression of Obama, compared to 48 percent who view him unfavorably. The NYT/CBS poll found that 39 percent viewed Obama favorably compared to 42 percent that viewed him unfavorably.
“These numbers could typically spell doom for an incumbent,” poll director Lee Miringoff told McClatchy. “Any way you look at it, the numbers do not paint a pretty picture.”
