Farewell to the fleet

On May 4, Baltimore City will say goodbye to the visiting Volvo Ocean Race in the Parade of Sail as the boats depart for Annapolis to dock until the start of the next leg of the race.

The boats will be in Annapolis until they leave at 1 p.m. May 7 forLeg Seven to New York, NY. The best viewing spots for the Parade of Sail include Baltimore?s Inner Harbor, Annapolis City Docks, Fort McHenry National Monument or Tide Point.

“It?s a great time for everyone to come out and wave goodbye to the boats,” said Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts Communications Director Tracy Baskerville. “It?s also a great chance to see all of the boats together, since they come in from the race separately.”

Baskerville also said they expect a large turnout even though it?s a work day. “The parade is scheduled right at lunchtime, so people take time from work, and we often see people standing in their office buildings, waving goodbye,” Baskerville said.

Team ABN Amro, ABN Amro Two, Brazil 1, Ericsson Racing Team, movistar, Pirates of the Caribbean and the Brunel will take their places in the Parade of Sail, casting off at 11 a.m. for a leisurely float to Annapolis. Once there, the City of Annapolis will welcome the boats and begin their Maryland Maritime Heritage Festival, which will be held May 4 to 7.
