CDC projects up to 226,000 coronavirus deaths by mid-October

An ensemble forecast published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Thursday projects there will be as many as 226,000 coronavirus deaths in the United States by Oct. 17.

The CDC forecast comprises projections from 41 modeling groups of expected deaths over the next four weeks. The ensemble forecast published Thursday predicts that 3,400 to 7,400 new deaths will likely be reported during the week ending Oct. 17. The nationwide death toll is expected to increase to about 214,000 to 226,000.

The agency pointed out that the projections are not certain, and “the number of newly reported deaths per week may decrease in 5 jurisdictions and increase in one jurisdiction.”

New deaths reported Wednesday totaled roughly 1,100. Last week, on Sept. 14, about 1,300 new deaths were reported.

The total number of deaths due to COVID-19 in the U.S. has surpassed 202,000, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
