Kamala Harris expected to announce 2020 run on MLK Day

Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., is expected to announce a White House run later this month, on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The sources told KCBS Radio that Harris is likely to announce a 2020 run during a campaign rally in Oakland.

Harris has been signaling a White House run for several weeks now, and told ABC on Tuesday that she believes now “is that moment” to do something about the problems facing the nation.

The 54-year-old senator has been making the rounds on TV as part of a small tour to promote her new book, The Truths We Hold: An American Journey, which was released on Tuesday.

Harris has said she wants to consider her family before making a decision, but several sources say she has already made her decision to run and has the full support of her husband and two stepchildren.

Harris has faced growing criticism over a senior adviser who settled a $400,000 sexual harassment suit with a former employee that worked for him while he was at California’s Department of Justice. The alleged incidents happened and were reported while Harris served as the state’s attorney general.

The adviser resigned in December and Harris maintains that she was unaware of the allegations.

A Democratic strategist told the radio station that Harris is in risky territory, and said if she drags out an announcement any longer, she could appear indecisive or disingenuous.

“If she really has decided to run, my advice would be, announce,” Darry Sragow said. “Don’t drag this out.”
