Phoenix police announced Thursday the discovery of a dead full-term baby girl inside a restroom at Amazon’s warehouse in Phoenix, Ariz.
Emergency dispatchers received a call from the facility around 8:30 p.m. local time Wednesday about a baby that was found inside a lower level bathroom, according to Phoenix Police Sgt. Vincent Lewis.
Local media outlets specified the baby was found by a maintenance worker in a trash can inside the restroom.
Police and fire personnel responded to 53 West Lower Buckeye Road where they found the baby. Firefighters confirmed the infant was dead when they arrived at the online retail corporation’s warehouse.
Lewis said the baby had been in the restroom for “some time” but is believed to have been born or left there Wednesday. He did not specify if the baby was stillborn.
Investigators are looking into whether the infant may have been born in the toilet then discarded.
Police have identified the mother but not said if she is an employee of Amazon.
“It is a death investigation at this time,” Lewis told reporters at a press conference.
“This is a terribly sad and tragic incident,” Amazon said in a statement. “We are working with local authorities to support their investigation … The safety and wellness of our team is our top priority.”
