Making his closing arguments against President Trump’s impeachment, Rep. Matt Gaetz said Democrats believe the president’s supporters are “smelly Walmart shoppers.”
“This is not about the Ukraine. It’s about power. Donald Trump has it and House Democrats want it,” said the freshman Republican from Florida. “Democrats have been triggered into impeaching the president because they don’t like him and they don’t like us.”
Gaetz’s profile has risen considerably over the past several months as he has helped lead the defense of Trump. He has railed against Democratic allegations of obstruction and abuse by Trump, at one point demanding to know how Joe Biden’s son, Hunter, made “tens of thousands of dollars” working for the Ukrainian gas company Burisma Holdings despite his lack of experience.
In his speech before the House, Gaetz, 37, suggested that Democrats have wanted to impeach the president since the day he was elected.
“The day before she was sworn into Congress, one member of the body said she promised to impeach the motherf—-r. She’s not alone,” Gaetz stated. “Trump’s impeachment was plotted and planned before the ink was even dry on his election certificate.”
Before the hearings began, Gaetz said that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had been “catfished” into an “illegitimate” investigation of Trump.
“This impeachment is a slap in the face to the millions of Americans who voted for President Trump, the same Americans that Democrats in Washington have mocked as smelly Walmart shoppers and deplorables. This impeachment isn’t legitimate.”
