Annual Interfaith Service is Monday

Leaders of Baltimore City and local Jewish, Islam and Christian communities will usher in 2008 on Monday at the 15th annual New Year?s Eve Interfaith Service.

The Rev. Lauretta Halstead of the Kingdom Worship Center in Towson will give the sermon. The Rev. James Casciotti, St. Ignatius pastor, will host the various clergy in attendance. 

Among the visiting guests will be Imam Earl El-Amin, the  Rev. Archimandrite Constantine Moralis, Rabbi Jon Konheim, the Rev. Johnny Golden, and Bishop Denis Madden. Mayor Sheila Dixon is also scheduled to attend with leaders in education, social services, medical services, youth, the arts, public services and the media.

The service will be held at St. Ignatius Church, 740 N. Calvert St. in Baltimore. Admission is free but tickets are required. Music begins at 8 p.m. The service will be from 8:30 to 9:45 p.m. with a reception following. For more information, call 410-727-3848.

Release the past

The Bon Secours Spiritual Center will host a day of reconciliation and prayer, Letting Go of the Past: Embracing the Future with Hope on Monday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Participants will review 2007?s joys and challenges to explore how they can find hope in 2008. Oxygen bar for Tu B?Shevat

BEYOM, the young adult affiliate of the Beth El Congregation, will celebrate the Jewish holiday Tu B?Shevat Jan. 19 at 5 p.m. An all-you-can breathe, eat and drink bar featuring oxygen, beer, wine and traditional Tu B?Shevat foods such as fruits, vegetables and nuts will follow Havdalah services. Open House at Howard County?s shrine

The Companions of St. Anthony will host a guided tour of the Shrine of St. Anthony decorated for Christmas on Jan. 6 from 1 to 5 p.m. An evening prayer for world peace follows the tour. Refreshments will be provided. Admission is free. The Shrine, home to the Franciscan Friars for more than 70 years, is located at 12290 Folly Quarter Road in Ellicott City. Muslim Brothers Workshop

Newer Muslims are invited to meet other new members of the faith and a coach from the community every Saturday at Dar Al Taqwa in Ellicott City from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Participants can learn about Salah, or prayers, ablution, or Wudu, Zakat, or alms, the Muslim creed and other pillars of Islam.
