Star Trek director boldly donates to Obama

Director and producer J.J. Abrams is a big Obama donor according to campaign finance reports from the Federal Election Committee.

Abrams is easily among the hottest new directors and producers in Hollywood, after successfully directing the 2009 summer blockbuster re-boot of Star Trek, the third sequel to Mission Impossible, and, along with Steven Spielberg, the sci-fi adventure film Super 8.

Abrams also teamed up with Spielberg to fund Obama’s Super PAC, personally donating $50,000. (Spielberg donated $100,000) He has also donated $37,500 to American Bridge 21st Century, the Super PAC founded by Media Matters head David Brock. Abrams’s wife, Kathleen McGrath has matched his Super PAC donations making the Hollywood power couple’s total Super PAC expenditure at $175,000.

Abrams became popular in Hollywood after successfully producing TV shows including Alias and Lost. He is currently involved with the shows Alcatraz and Person of Interest.

Campaign records show that Abrams and his wife each donated $5,000 to President Obama’s re-election campaign in April of 2011 and the maximum $30,800 to the DNC.

Abrams also moderated a forum with First Lady Michelle Obama in June of 2011, as part of her Joining Forces initiative to promote military families, and hosted Rep. Nancy Pelosi for a rooftop fundraiser at his Bad Robot studio in September for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

Abrams and his wife have a long personal history of donating to Democrats backing several Senate candidates in the 2010 mid-term elections.

For the 2008 Democratic primary, Abrams donated $2,300 each to Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and John Edwards. In the 2004 primary he donated to Howard Dean.
