Pence: Trump ‘will stand by our allies’

Indiana Gov. Mike Pence went on the defensive Thursday, assuring that running mate Donald Trump will defend America’s allies.

“I’m very confident that Donald Trump will stand by our allies and stop apologizing to our enemies,” he said on Fox News’ “Fox & Friends” Thursday morning.

The comments come in response to a Trump interview in which the Republican nominee said he would come to the defense of NATO allies only if they have fulfilled “their obligations to us.”

“I haven’t seen the exact context of his words,” Pence explained Thursday. “I think Donald Trump’s position very broadly with regard to our allies and with regard to treaty obligations and NATO, is that it’s time for allies to begin to pay their fair share.”

The GOP’s vice presidential nominee added that it’s “time for people to step up.”

Pence said he and Trump have talked about America’s allies and they agree to “stand strongly” for them.
