Take notice: Jay Bulger could be poised to become Washington’s next homegrown big thing in the entertainment industry — the question is in what capacity: Writer, director, actor?
“People tell me you have to focus” on one thing, says Bulger, who graduated from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in 2000 and Fordham University in 2004. “I don’t think you really do.”

He’s modeled in New York for Kenneth Cole and Armani, among others. He’s directed music videos for a list of talent that includes the Washington Social Club, Arcade Fire and the Hold Steady.
He’s also written 12 episodes — one of which he’s shot as a pilot — of a series he created called “Good Exposure,” dealing with college graduates trying to navigate the world of male modeling. He’s had meetings with Dreamworks, NBC and ABC about picking up the show.
And this week, he comes back home to begin shooting 10 video podcasts for the D.C. Convention and Visitors Association. Each episode will take viewers to one of the locations where “National Treasure 2” was filmed.
But Bulger, who is the son of transportation lobbyist Tom Bulger, says all those projects are secondary to “Cherry Blossoms,” a short film partly inspired by Colman McCarthy’s peace studies course at Bethesda-Chevy Chase.
“I’m no Gandhi, but I do realize that there is a way to not only tell a good story, but to have a good message,” he said.
