Obama is hiding from downgrade, Bachmann says

DES MOINES, Iowa — Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann pulled all her favorite zingers on Obama Sunday evening at a rally in Iowa, cracking on the president for his reliance on teleprompters, accusing him of turning away from Israel and blaming him for for the country’s recent downgrade in its credit rating.

“I know you have never seen a president or a candidate in the White House without teleprompters,” she said, drawing laughter from a group of roughly 100 Polk County Republicans. “But you will not see teleprompters in a Bachmann White House.”

She accused the president of ignoring the country’s credit rating downgrade because he spent the weekend at Camp David, and said his decision not to fire Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner shows that he has no plan to restore the country’s credit worthiness.

“I get the economy,” she said. “I understand it… I know what we need to do to turn this economy around.”

Bachmann also charged Obama with “stealing” money from senior citizens’ Medicare and giving it to young people, and said that when she asked the president how he would maintain the health care system for the elderly “he kind of mumbled and didn’t really answer.”

Feeding her ultra-conservative base, she reminded voters that she stands for the Second Amendment, noting that she and her father “used to reload our shotgun shells down in the basement,” and she promised to build a fence “every mile, every yard, every foot, every inch along our Southern border” to keep out immigrants from Mexico.

Bachmann also bashed taxpayer-subsidized birth control, and she likened the “morning after pill” to abortion in a bottle. Her first decision as president would be to repeal every last bit of the health care reform bill passed under Obama’s leadership, she said.
