Sen. Claire McCaskill announces breast cancer diagnosis

Sen. Claire McCaskill announced Monday that she has breast cancer and plans to take the next three weeks off to undergo a course of treatment.

Her tumor was discovered through a regular mammogram “very recently,” the Missouri Democrat announced in a Tumblr post. She wrote that she will be staying in St. Louis for the next three weeks in order to receive treatment.

“It’s a little scary, but my prognosis is good and I expect a full recovery,” McCaskill wrote.

McCaskill was first elected in 2006 and won re-election in 2012 against former Rep. Todd Akin.

She also wrote that she will post on her website how she would have voted on any measure taken up by the Senate and will also submit questions in writing to any committee hearings she misses while away for treatment.
