How to celebrate National Doughnut Day, according to the 2020 candidates

Wondering how to celebrate National Doughnut Day? Just look to the 2020 candidates.

Businesses from Walmart to Krispy Kreme are offering deals on doughnuts on Friday, a smart move considering the popularity of the dessert. Only 11% of Americans don’t eat doughnuts, according to a 2015 poll. The rest of the U.S. appears to love the baked good, and these Democratic presidential candidates are no exception.

Elizabeth Warren

The senator from Massachusetts made headlines a few years ago for bringing Dunkin’ doughnuts to a sit-in, and she’s also been clear on her policy when it comes to specific flavors. Not only does she endorse doughnuts, she’s also a fan of the dessert from “The Simpsons.”

Cory Booker

Known for freely declaring his love for coffee and sleep on Twitter, the New Jersey senator has also expressed a love for doughnuts. I have to question his commitment after he passed up free doughnuts in 2011, but he seems to have redeemed himself the following year. Disturbingly, he has been silent on the issue for some time.

Kamala Harris

It appears the California senator doesn’t like sprinkles on her doughnuts. Therefore, any and all further dessert recommendations from the candidate are rendered invalid.

Pete Buttigieg

The South Bend, Ind., mayor looks thrilled to receive a sprinkled, chocolate-glazed birthday doughnut. However, he says he’s never had one before, so his support for the doughnut cause may be politically motivated.

Beto O’Rourke

The former U.S. representative appears to have fully endorsed doughnuts, encouraging the consumption of the delicious dessert and apparently even making them himself.

Bernie Sanders

Bernie Sanders deserves some sort of prize. At the time of this writing, he is the only 2020 candidate who has mentioned National Doughnut Day. Note that he does so poorly, misrepresenting a clip of my boss, Tim Carney. I don’t endorse the Vermont senator’s claim, only his support of doughnuts.

Evidence of former Vice President Joe Biden’s feelings for doughnuts were not immediately available. Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar, it appears, prefers salads.
