Russia targeted hospitals and journalists from the beginning, White House says

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said that Russian forces have targeted hospitals and journalists “from the beginning” following the news of a Fox News reporter and producer being killed covering the war in Ukraine.

Fox News cameraman Pierre Zakrzewski was killed while operating in Ukraine, along with producer Oleksandra Kurshynova. U.S. journalist Brent Renaud was also shot and killed on Saturday in an attack that led to injuries for photojournalist Juan Arredondo.

“We have seen from the beginning that they have targeted hospitals. They’ve targeted journalists,” said Psaki. “In terms of these individual cases, I can’t make an assessment of that from here. But certainly, we’ve seen barbaric and horrific actions by the military on the ground. And this is consistent with that.”

The war has created a dangerous situation for Ukrainian citizens and journalists alike.

Russian airstrikes in Mariupol on Wednesday destroyed the maternity hospital, the children’s ward, and the hospital’s department of internal medicine.

At least 17 women and staff members were injured, and three people died. A pregnant woman and her baby both died from injuries sustained after the Russian airstrike on the hospital.
