McCain: Republicans ‘doing the same thing’ as Democrats on healthcare

Sen. John McCain is annoyed with the process his colleagues are taking to pass a healthcare bill through the Senate, accusing Republicans of “doing the same thing” as Democrats when they pushed through the Affordable Care Act.

Senate Republicans are preparing to vote on legislation to repeal parts of Obamacare next week after a closed-door process driven by Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., which has included no public hearings.

McConnell says a draft version of the bill will be released Thursday.

McCain, R-Ariz., was asked by reporters Tuesday if he is satisfied with the process.

“No, no, of course, not,” McCain said. “For the obvious reason. We used to complain like hell when Democrats ran the Affordable Care Act. Now we’re doing the same thing.”

Asked if he had seen the Senate bill, McCain said that he hadn’t and joked that no other American has.

“No, nor have I met any American that has,” McCain said. “I’m sure the Russians have been able to hack in and gotten most of it.”

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., reacted with glee to McCain’s frustration — a feeling shared by other Republicans.

“[McCain] calling out Republican hypocrisy is music to my ears,” Pelosi wrote in a tweet. “Americans deserve to know what’s in the bill. #Trumpcare.”
