A Republican strategist may run against Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch in the 2018 primary.
Boyd Matheson, a former chief of staff to Sen. Mike Lee who now runs a conservative think tank, is considering a run against the longtime Utah senator, according to Politico.
Matheson met with former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon and Citizens United President David Bossie last week.
Hatch, 83, has been weighing whether to run for re-election. Mitt Romney has already said he would consider a run for Senate if Hatch retires.
Bannon previously backed Roy Moore in Alabama’s special election over then-Sen. Luther Strange.
