They are one of the most sought-after classes of voters, their ills and economic plight highlighted by Democrats and Republicans, but once elections are over, they are typically kicked to the side.
Now, there’s a move to give the “white working class” its due, alongside black people, Hispanics, and gay people.
Public interest law professor John Banzhaf, a successful activist for many causes, told us that politicians who rely on the “WWC” vote should champion them after elections with studies, programs, and even college studies, just like for minorities.
“If politicians and government officials finally begin to understand and appreciate how important this group is to winning elections, they will begin paying more attention to the problems which drive them, unlike all other groups, to die from diseases of despair, and fashion programs, which will be effective in addressing their unique problems,” said the George Washington University Law School professor.
Since Joe Biden was named by many the president-elect, Banzhaf urged the Democrat to consider the issues plaguing the white working class when picking his Cabinet.
“This means that if Biden appointees want to address their problems and concerns in a meaningful and effective way, they have to understand the experiences, views, and attitudes which too often lead existing government programs to fail,” he said.
Banzhaf said that the group has won the attention of authors in books such as Hillbilly Elegy. Yet, they are often written off by liberal colleges as rednecks, especially for supporting President Trump.
And when asked why professors aren’t eager to promote them, Banzhaf told Secrets, “There are not many WWC professors or university administrators.”
