Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney both lead President Obama in a new poll of Virginia voters, as the president trails by double digits among independents in the state carried in 2008.
Santorum leads Obama 46 to 42, while Romney leads Obama 46 to 43. The survey of 1,018 voters, conducted by Christopher Newport University (CNU) on behalf of the Richmond Times-Dispatch and released yesterday, has a 3.1 percent margin of error.
Obama loses independents by 23 points in head-to-head matchup with Santorum, who is supported by 54 percent of independents. Romney leads Obama, among independents, 48 to 35.
Ron Paul is tied at 43 to 43 with Obama, carrying 47 percent of independents.
