President Trump wants to reassure the senators White House spokesman Raj Shah described as “persuadable” about the sexual assault allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, Shah said Saturday.

Shah said the White House thinks those senators genuinely want the FBI investigation ordered by Trump on Friday to get more information on the allegations against Kavanaugh by California professor Christine Blasey Ford, who accused the federal judge of sexually assaulting her during a high school party more than 30 years ago.
“It comes down to a few senators’ votes. They want to be reassured, so we are going on with the process. Judge Kavanaugh has had nothing to hide,” Shah said.
Kavanaugh denied Ford’s allegations in testimony in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday.
Shah noted the FBI investigation, which will take no longer than a week, is a supplement to the existing background investigation on Kavanaugh.
The president ordered the investigation Friday, after Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., voted to pass Kavanaugh’s nomination out of committee, but requested the FBI look into the allegations before the full Senate votes. The Senate opened debate on Kavanaugh’s nomination in a voice vote Friday evening.
