WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama has spoken with Peace Corps volunteers in Tanzania to pay tribute to President John F. Kennedy.
The White House says Obama met with volunteers and leaders via videoconference on Friday, the 50th anniversary of Kennedy’s assassination. Kennedy is credited with establishing the Peace Corps.

Obama opened the meeting with a moment of silence to honor Kennedy’s memory. Obama also heard about work Americans are doing overseas to promote public health, food security and youth empowerment.
The White House says since the Peace Corps was created, more than 215,000 Americans have participated, serving in 139 countries.
