Sacramento shooting suspects were repeat criminals prohibited from having guns

Two suspects in custody for the deadly shooting in Sacramento, California, have lengthy criminal histories. But Democrats don’t care about that: Naturally, they think the only lesson here is in favor of more gun control.

The two suspects who are believed to be responsible for the shooting are brothers: Dandrae Martin and Smiley Martin. Dandrae Martin has an outstanding warrant for a misdemeanor domestic violence charge and has been wanted in Riverside County, California, since 2015. In 2014, he pleaded guilty after he “inflicted bodily injury resulting in a traumatic condition” to his spouse. He was jailed in Arizona for violating parole after attempting to commit aggravated assault and was released in 2020 after a year and a half.

Smiley Martin was given a 10-year sentence in 2018 for domestic violence and assault with great bodily injury after he had broken into his girlfriend’s home and beat her severely. The investigation into the incident also revealed that he had been pimping out his girlfriend. He served just four years of that sentence despite the Sacramento County District Attorney’s office writing to the parole board that he should remain in prison. Prior to that, he had also served time for multiple robberies.

California Democrats have already moved on to gun control, even though many facts need to be cleared up. Meanwhile, Martin is already facing charges for possession of a machine gun and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. Dandrae Martin is also being charged with possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. Both men were already breaking the law, but there is no such thing as too much gun control for California liberals.

Smiley Martin should not have been out on the street. He was released early from a sentence that would have had him in jail through 2028. Dandrae Martin was a repeat offender who was released just two years ago after apparently serving more time in jail in Arizona than he ever did in California despite his criminal record.

Another gun control bill isn’t magically going to change this. As is the case with most recent mass shootings, gun control laws weren’t going to prevent the Sacramento shooting if the brothers were indeed the ones who opened fire. California’s lax attitude toward crime and keeping criminals in prison has been a real issue for years now, and we are once again seeing the real-world consequences.
